Volunteer Opportunities

"There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer."

Many people have found it very rewarding to volunteer with Dawson County Humane Society.  While we have a small, paid staff that is invaluable to the operation of our organization, our volunteers contribute in many ways.  Volunteer opportunities include:

Adult Volunteer Opportunities
Our organization is comprised of many groups and committees that use their skills and talents to support their love of animals.

  • Our off-site adoption teams, appearing every Saturday and Sunday at  PetSmart in Cumming, GA (Exit 14 off GA 400),  always welcome  new setup/breakdown volunteers.  Contact Jason Hutcherson at dawsonhumane@windstream.net to learn more.

  • Fundraising and special events are an important source of income for providing our homeless pets with the care and love they deserve.  If you enjoy working with people and don't mind rolling up your sleeves and "just getting it done,” we could use your help.  Please check our "Calendar of Events" to review upcoming volunteer opportunities and contact Terri Tragesser at bordercollie@windstream.net to discuss how you can contribute to the "fun" in fundraising.
  • Shelter Care - Do you enjoy caring for animals to ensure that they have a clean, safe and healthy environment while they await adoption?  Many opportunities are available - doing laundry, walking the dogs, socializing cats, landscaping, running errands, etc.  No job is too big or too small to help maintain our facility.  Please call the shelter at 706-265-9160 to learn how you can help.
  • Foster Care – Some animals require special care by dedicated "foster parents" who provide tender loving care in their homes.   Volunteers who have fostered dogs and cats for the shelter have found it to be a rewarding experience.  Please contact the shelter at 706-265-9160 for more information about becoming a foster parent.

Teen and Community Service Opportunities

Many high school and college curricula require minimum hours doing community service, and Dawson County Humane Society is happy to help you meet these requirements.  Based on your age, we have a variety of volunteer opportunities (some require parental or guardian supervision) which you will find both fun and rewarding.  Please contact the shelter at 706-265-9160 to learn more, or contact Jason Hutcherson (Shelter Director) at dawsonhumane@windstream.net.  Court-imposed community service is scheduled directly with our shelter.  Please call 706-265-9160 to learn more about how you can complete your obligation.
