Our Goals

Dawson County’s phenomenal growth creates two pet-related problems:

        1. More stray pets wandering the County.
       2. More conflicts between these strays and the increasing number of people.

Our new animal shelter will provide safe haven for the strays and increase the personal safety of Dawson County citizens.

Goal #1 - Provide Homes

Your DCHS intends to reunite lost pets with their original owners. The national average is for shelters to give owners only 3 days before their pets may be placed up for adoption. DCHS plans to increase that period to 5 days and include one weekend so that working people have a better opportunity to identify their pets before someone else can adopt them.

The DCHS hopes to find homes for every dog and cat found suitable for adoption. Foster care is an essential part of that dream. Designing an expandable facility is also critical to adjust to changes in the County’s population.

Goal #2 - Aggressive Spay/Neuter Plans

Your DCHS hopes to place only spayed/neutered pets in new homes.  The DCHS has a Spay/Neuter Fund with plans to assist needy pet-owners with the cost of surgery. Hall County Humane Society began an ambitious program, opening a Spay/Neuter Clinic in 2005. Their dream is to make low-cost surgical sterilization available to shelters and rescue groups throughout North Georgia.

Goal #3 - Teach Responsible Pet Ownership

At the root of the stray animal problem is irresponsible behavior among humans. Immediately after the formation of the organization, the DCHS began a public education program. Members of your DCHS go into the classrooms to instill responsible pet-care ideas in young minds. When humans choose harmful behavior towards animals, the DCHS will work closely with the law enforcement community to encourage the proper respect for animal life.
